“His go-from-poverty-to-prosperity story is one for the movies. Born into a family living in a shack in a small town in Kansas and knowing only poverty, food stamps, and hand-me-down clothes…”
What expectations would you set for someone like that? Where do you think they would have ended up?
This is an often-used introduction before I am interviewed or about to speak. This is how I reset the expectations for myself.
Take a business transaction for example. When you over promise, you under deliver. Every single time.
Solution? Under promise and over deliver.
There are three answers that someone can give you during an interaction 1) Yes 2) No 3) WOW!
Wow is what you are aiming for.
Wow them that ‘a realtor’ would go so far out of the way to ensure your home is clean and comfortable for a seamless move.
Wow them that a professional they worked with years ago still calls the day before their birthday to wish them a Happy Birthday.
Wow them that they still get invited to events after moving away or a donation has been made to a charity in their name.
Be warned that not everyone will understand this. It’s not what is usually done. It’s not the current expectation.
So not everything is going to work out for you 100 percent of the time. Are you okay with that?
Well, you need to be okay with that. If you simply come forward with love, generosity and appreciation to serve people then they will want to give the same love, generosity, appreciation and service back to you.
Truly listen to someone instead of preparing what your response will be. Listen. Don’t interrupt or talk over them. Listen. Take a moment (a small silence is okay!) and THEN respond. Surprise them with the unexpected.
When they ask you something along the lines of ‘How can I repay you?’ The answer is ‘Referrals.’
If you want to go into more depth on this, listen here. Reset someone’s expectations today with good, strong communication and a whole lot of love. People are craving more of that today and you’re about to be their superhero.
Do not let your wisdom go unnoticed.
Do not let yourself get in your own way.
Do not wait for a life-changing event to change your life.
Your Coach,
Michael
